AMIGDALA - Alliance for Modelling Industries towards the Green Deal’s objectives And circuLArity

Initial situation:
The EU Green Deal aims to reach climate neutrality by 2050. Moving away from fossil resources is necessary to achieve this goal but implies an unprecedented transformation of the energy system and of almost the entire basic process industry. Given its strategic importance for the European citizens and the economy, it is imperative to transform the industry while ensuring its profitability and competitiveness, to retain industry in Europe.
Project targets:
AMIGDALA is a Horizon Europe project with the aim to facilitate political decision makers and in the EU’s industries to define and evaluate pathways towards climate neutrality, circularity and sustainability.
Innovative approaches:
Several models from different domains will be coupled to operate as-one in a standardized way that allows the set of models to be changed or extended, so to assess alternative technology transformation pathways with a proper temporal and spatial resolution, the consideration of the macro-economic and social aspects. As a result, the models together show a more accurate and realistic representation of the effects that control options have on the parameters that are important for each stakeholder. Common databases and integrated models that are aligned with the sustainability goals of the Green Deal are used for this purpose. The project provides an integrated model to illustrate the transformation pathways of EU industry until 2070 and covers historical developments since 1990.
Benefits for the industry:
The resulting integrated model shows the combined effect of control options on economy, trade, energy, materials flow, biomass and industrial production on an EU systems-level and within a global context. and allows to analyze the effect of framework conditions on the uptake of transformative solutions and products and on energy demand, emissions, and material use.
